How to Learn English as a Second Language

Learning English as a second language (ESL) is an exciting endeavor that you can undertake at any time in your life. There are many aspects of learning English as a second language, including how to comprehend, speak, listen, read, and write English. You can study ESL to acquaint yourself with basic English language skills or to advance and perfect skills that you may already have. Here are some methods that you can use to learn English as a second language:

ESL Classes:  Many colleges and universities offer ESL classes to those who are preparing to apply for citizenship. These classes are usually small so that each student is given individual attention and taught English according to their abilities and needs. ESL classes allow you to engage with many others students who are also learning English and to perfect your English vocabulary, grammar, and word pronunciation. To maximize the benefit of taking an ESL class you can enroll in the class several times to gain the skills you need to communicate in different situations. Each time you enroll, you will meet new people and acquire new skills.

Immerse Yourself In English:  To rapidly learn the English language, you should study it every day. One way to do this is to find someone who speaks English as their first language and converse with them regularly. This can broaden your English vocabulary and teach you correct English pronunciation. When studying English, you should carry an English dictionary with you at all times so that you can look up the definition and pronunciation of new English words as you learn them. When you are shopping or in any location with a lot of English-speaking people, communicate only in English. This immersion will enable you to learn conversational English rapidly.

Think In English:  When learning English, it is beneficial to think in English. Even when you are not conversing in English or reading English, you can mentally translate your thoughts from your native language into English. This will encourage you to get into the habit of thinking in English. At first, you may need to remind yourself to think in English, but soon it will become second nature to you and you will learn English rapidly.

Play English Word Games:  Another way to learn English is to play word games. You can do this online by completing English crossword puzzles, playing word games such as word search, hangman, Scrabble, word jumble, and by taking English quizzes. You can also download English word games on your cell phone so that you can play these games whenever you wish. When in an ESL class, you can suggest to the teacher that you play word games such as Charades and Pictionary in English. These are dynamic and fun ways to learn the English language.

Join An Online Forum:  You can also join an online forum that discusses a subject that you are interested in English. Many forums exist online where you can discuss sports, fashion, health, travel, cooking, games, current events, and other topics. Being a member of an online forum can acquaint you with people in many parts of the world and where you can converse with them in English 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

Whether you are learning the English language to study subjects in school, advance your career, or to become a citizen, you can progress quickly if you incorporate your ESL study into many aspects of your life. With dedication and perseverance, you will be able to understand, speak, read, and write English within a very short amount of time.
